Workplace Harassment

Employment Related Harassment Policy

The Diocese of Cairns promotes a culture of intolerance to workplace harassment – discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying – through policy education and promotion, and regular feedback to employers by way of statistics and reports, by Diocesan Workplace Harassment Officers.

Diocesan Workplace Harassment Officers are volunteer employees from various Diocesan workplaces, who aim to provide an immediate response to employees in a confidential manner.

What is a Diocesan Officer for Workplace Harassment?

A Workplace Harassment Officer is someone who has had specialist training in order to provide confidential information to employee’s who may be experiencing  employment related harassment.

The Diocese has in place a number of trained employees who are available to other employees working in the areas of education, employment, welfare and Diocesan services.

If you would like more information please call one of the Diocesan Workplace Harassment Officers listed below. The officer you call does not need to be from your place of employment.

Role of a Workplace Harassment Officer

  1. Recommend action to employers that may prevent this behaviour from occurring or continuing in the workplace
  1. Referral to other support services outside of the organisation
  1. Act as a role model for appropriate workplace behaviour
  1. Promote the development and review of policies on equal opportunity  complaints, procedures, and harassment
  1. Provide relevant statistics or general information to management and employers
  1. Assist in the provision of education and training for employees when required

What the Role isn’t

  1. An advocate, judge or counsellor
  1. Reporter of specifics about cases to management and employers

  1. A conscience for the organisation

What I can do

Familiarise yourself with your workplace policy and procedures. A Workplace Harassment Officer can assist you in helping you to understand these policies.

If you are unable to resolve your issues following the above mentioned internal procedures, then your Workplace Harassment Officer will be able to provide you with referral information to an external source.
