Where are we going with Digital Learning?

Network Administration at St Therese's School, Bentley ParkCairns Catholic Education Services is working to address the challenges that are posed by the desire to achieve 21st century contemporary learning across the diocese. This learning is based on a belief that education is leading us to be:

  • People of hope, joy, courage and wisdom
  • Communicators who are effective and creative
  • Learners who are inquiring and reflective, seeking truth
  • Participants and producers who are independent and interdependent
  • Citizens of the world who are responsible, ethical and resourceful
  • People enriched by a spiritual appreciation of self, God, neighbour and life

(Diocesan Learning Framework Diocese of Cairns – CES 2007)

Therefore the vision for digital learning across the Diocese is for ICT to be integral to learning and teaching in Diocesan schools in order to “empower those in our community to engage with and enrich our ever changing world”.St Andrew's Catholic College, Redlynch

Objectives for Digital Learning in the diocese include:

The Diocese has recently joined CEnet which is a collection of Catholic education networks connecting school communities across metropolitan, regional and rural New South Wales, Queensland, NT and the ACT. CEnet’s member dioceses share a common vision for a network and learning architecture suitable for the support of education and evangelisation in the digital age.

CEnet have contracted with Editure to provide an education portal for connected schools. The rollout of this portal known as ‘mysuite’ is the major focus in digital learning at present.

The provision of ‘mysuite’ lies at the core of our approach to enhancing learning and teaching in the 21st century. ‘mysuite’ empowers both teachers and students, and facilitates communication, publication, sharing and collaboration - all key elements of any successful learning and teaching environment. The ‘mysuite’ learning and Internet management system provides schools with the capacity to access educational content in a safe manner and interact with other schools across dioceses and indeed, the world. It will enable the Diocese to establish a true connected learning community.

For students, ‘mysuite’ will provide:

  1. anytime, anywhere access to their own e-learning environment
  2. personalised user experience enhancing interest and ownership
  3. collaborative online programs aimed at building learning communities
  4. delivery of targeted learning content
  5. activities to foster independent learning
  6. opportunities for parental involvement in children's learning programs (by having access to their children's personal portal, from home)
  7. access to resources that best suit their learning styles and abilities by choosing from the wide range of resources available.
This is an exciting time for the Diocese, as we truly become a Connected Learning Community.
