This supplement is included in The Cairns Post (whose circulation area is about the same as the geographical boundaries of the Diocese of Cairns) four times a year, usually around Christmas, Easter and then on two occasions in between. Catholic News furthers the work of its predecessor, Diocesan News, which was an in-house production, though it was printed by the Cairns Post . It was then dispatched to the schools and parishes across the Diocese, where it was distributed free of charge. The untiring, efforts of Bill McGreggor, Lou Tuttle, the late Nev Cowan, and their helpers need to be acknowledge and preserved as part of the history of this project. They produced a local paper which has been widely read and appreciated. The Catholic News gives the added advantages not only of colour, professional formatting and editing, but of a much wider distribution. According to Commonwealth census figures across the area covered by the Diocese of Cairns, between 25-30% of the population nominated themselves as 'Catholic'. Added to the many others who have varying contact with the Catholic Church - through its' pastoral, educational, aged care and welfare arms, and those in the direct employ of the Church in this Diocese (some 1,800 which makes the Church by far the largest employer in the region), at least half of the population would have some degree of connection with the Church. Extra copies of this supplement continue to be distributed free of charge in the parish churches across the region and to each family of children in our Catholic Schools.
